Fermilab’s 6,800-acre site is divided into the technical and infrastructure areas such as buildings, roads and tunnels, as well as open areas. FNA is an independent not-for-profit corporation that is dependent on volunteers for most activities and on members' dues and donations and grants for 100% of its funding. It assists with funding and other facets of the management of natural areas at the lab. FNA and the Fermi Research Alliance, LLC are signatories to a Memorandum of Understanding that governs their relationship.

In an effort to continue and expand the restoration and conservation activities at Fermilab, Fermilab Natural Areas (FNA) was created. FNA is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation that assists with funding and other facets of the management of natural areas at the Lab. FNA and the Fermi Research Alliance, LLC are signatories to a Memorandum of Understanding that governs their relationship.
